Share market holidays 2022

Before we discuss share market holiday list 2022, it is important to first define what a vacation in these terms means. First of all, it also can be called share market close day. As a rule, market holidays coincide with nationwide events and holidays, obviously, depending on the country. In addition to more predictable closures, some are more curious – for instance, in Brazil the stock market doesn’t operate for two days during the carnival – in 2022, it’s February 28 and March 1. In Japan the markets are closed on the Emperor’s birthday, vernal and autumnal equinox, Old Age Day and Children’s Day.

In addition to national holidays, customers will not be able to use the markets on standard weekends. Unlike online exchanges with 24/7 support, offline securities marketplaces  operate on a strict schedule, approximately from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. Additionally, when planning to use them, keep in mind that on the eve of the holidays, exchanges may close several hours earlier, as they have a short day.

When is the stock market closed?

Let’s say a customer decides to go into the market and buy a few shares. How to understand whether the market is open or closed tomorrow? In order to be aware of the work schedule and not waste time communicating with representatives and clarifying the nuances, you should study the list of standard dates with holidays in advance.

For instance, in India this year stock exchanges are closed on the following days to celebrate various Jain, Sikh, HIndu and Muslim holidays as well as Independence Day:

On the other hand, the US stock market is open tomorrow if tomorrow is not a Saturday or Sunday, or any of the following dates:

  • 04/07/2022 — Independence Day;
  • 05/09/2022 — Labor Day;
  • 10/10/2022 — Columbus Day;
  • 11/11/2022 — Veterans Day;
  • 24/11/2022 — Thanksgiving Day;
  • 26/12/2022 — Observance of Christmas Day, which occurs on Sunday, Dec. 25, 2022.

In 2022 the US exchanges are also closed on 17/01/2022 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day), 21/02/2022 (President’s Day), 15/04/2022 (Good Friday), 30/05/2022 (Memorial Day), 20/06/2022 (for Juneteenth since 19/06/2022 is a weekend).

Early closure for bond markets

While stock markets have very few or no early closes, this is common in bond markets. However, their “short day” usually ends at 14:00.

Bank, stock and bond market holidays differ

As a rule, stock, bond, and bank market holidays are slightly different in all countries. Non-working days for the US stock market depend on the decision of the Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) and the securities industry — nine days off have been announced for 2022. It is worth remembering that equity markets have also adopted a new holiday on June 19th, following the example of the Nasdaq and NYSE.

But the bond markets will close early only six times a year (all cases are described in the previous paragraph), reducing their operating time by 2 hours. They differ from the Federal Reserve System weekend schedule and most US banking institutions. Interestingly, the Federal Reserve System celebrates Veterans Day and Columbus Day but doesn’t take Good Friday off and doesn’t have formally scheduled early closing days.

Stock exchanges don’t sleep that long!

Despite the list of holidays and short days, do not assume that stock exchanges rest too much. For example, they may be closed for three days in a row rarely, when, according to the state schedule, Friday is a public holiday and is combined with the standard closed Saturday and Sunday. In other cases, the weekend lasts two days for the end of the week and 1 day in the case of a public holiday.

However, do not forget about emergencies: for example, after the tragedy in the Twin Towers or after the Sandy Hurricane, the exchanges took a much longer break from work. That is, there is no rule about the maximum three days off, it is rather just a common rule that can be violated in critical situations.
